Oct. 16 Speaker Event: Joe Marianek and Dinah Fried

If you’re anything like me you probably have your favorite blogs that you go to on a fairly regular basis. For me, I visit Pentagram’s site weekly (sometimes it’s closer to daily) to see what new work they’re posting. I always see if I can guess which partner did the work before I look at the credits. It’s a game I’m not great at (the new partners are throwing me off; yes, I’ll put the blame on them). When you look at the credits you’ll see who the partner-in-charge is and right next to it you’ll see who the designer is. I’ve always wondered who the designer behind the partner truly is. What’s it like to have worked with Michael Bierut or Paula Scher? I can’t tell you how excited I am that AIGA Houston is bringing one of those designers to Houston.

Joe Marianek worked at Pentagram twice (!?!?!?), spent some time as lead designer at Landor and then a brief stint at Apple in their branding department. There HAS to be some good stories here. Then my good friend, Tyler Swanner, told me that the AIGA is bringing in his wife, Dinah Fried, who is just as accomplished a designer as Joe. I’ll be honest, the name didn’t ring any bells but when I looked into her I found myself thinking, “Holy crap! She’s fantastic!” Not only did she work as a project manager at Pentagram (more power to her, I know I couldn’t do that), she went on to receive her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and was featured in 2012’s Graphic Design USA as a “person to watch”. Her work has been recognized by the AIGA and Type Directors Club to name just a few accolades. Her latest project is the book, Fictitious Dishes: An Album of Literature’s Most Memorable Meals, in which she interprets culinary moments from contemporary and classic literature. Not only did she photograph all the dishes but brought each one to life. The book has been recognized by The New York Times, the Huffington Post and O, The Oprah Magazine, just to name a few.

This is one duo I’m not going to miss. You shouldn’t either. Join us next week, October 16 at Sundance Cinemas. Get the event details and register for the event here.
