Chip Kidd Event Recap

Last month Chip Kidd visited us at Domy Books for a little book signing, socializing and a presentation. He of course, didn’t disappoint!

Chip started his presentation with a few vintage video and print “superhero” clips. It wouldn’t be a Chip Kidd event without a little Batman thrown in (in this case Japanese Batman, for good measure). Chip is one who has found a way to incorporate his personal passion into his work, albeit in different way than you might expect – this is authorship in a more complete way (creating the content and not just the cover). His compendiums of superhero legacies (Batman and Superman come to mind) combine his passion with his graphic skill, resulting in books that are just as much about the subject as they are about design. Go ahead, go over to Amazon and take a look, I know you want to…

When Chip finally revealed the title of his presentation “Bitch, I don’t know your life!” I found it fitting as he’s one who seems to have lived his life very visibly (just read the Wikipedia entry).

His name is synonymous with book cover designs, and he showed quite a few throughout the presentation. It wasn’t just a typical portfolio show – Chip always takes you through the humorous “scenic” route, offering his own humorous commentary. There’s lots to see: go see the photo gallery or watch this clip from his presentation below.
