The Intention of Profit: Talk

Do you know your value? Define it. Sell it.

Whether running a small studio or searching for a new job, selling your value is one of the biggest challenges most designers face. Talent alone doesn’t pay bills or create a sustainable future, so even the most talented among us are often struggling to make ends meet. Worse, every designer who compromises his/her/their value just to get work contributes to the undermining of the entire industry while cheating clients of higher returns.

Despite training their employees to negotiate your value away to improve their bottom line, your customers/employers need you to sell and negotiate better. More than under-appreciated pixel movers that make pretty deliverables, they need you championing the innovative value-add of design and creativity. But you have to do it for yourself first. You can’t expect a credible seat in their boardroom if you aren’t able to establish your own value and financial stability.

You didn’t magically become a great designer. It took training and consistent practice that has continued over time. Have you put equal time and effort into developing your business skills? If not, Sherra Bell would like to help.

If you’d like to get better at communicating your value to improve your overall financial stability now and for years to come, join us for one or both of the following events:

As such, she measures the success of every adventure by its new or renewed relationships.

A long-time leader in the design community, Sherra served as President of AIGA Atlanta from 2005-2007, followed by two terms on AIGA’s National Nominating Committee. She continues to serve the chapter as Education Co-Chair advising the Student Board created under her presidency. She earned her BFA in graphic design from Auburn University and her MA in diversity and social change from Iliff School of Theology.
